Re: Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

I was thinking that filling it up would be better just to keep the inside of the boiler walls from being exposed to air/oxidizing. I will do this soon, how about this, any reason to remove the RV antifreeze? I won't be expecting it to protect anything just would eliminate a step if I can just leave ...

Re: Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

OK, we're back and the frost is pretty much out, question for you all...would you leave the antifreeze in the lines for summer and deal with it in the fall or should we push the RV antifreeze out and fill with water and chemical to sit for the summer? PS have a great summer, take a break from feedin...

Re: Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

Becarp, I am happy to give you my feedback but realistically I wont have much info for a while. We will very soon be gone for a while and when we return it will be warm enough not to worry about frost or freezing. I do plan to refill my system with water then so the tank does not sit dry all summer,...

Re: Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

Ok, blew out the lines to the house and the tub last night, pumped them full of RV antifreeze and we are on the bottle(LP)! All went well but surprised me on the amount of antifreeze I needed to pump. The distance from the house to the boiler is about 50 feet so total of 100 feet of 1" for supply an...

Re: Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

We live in NW Wisconsin and March can still have some below zero lows and April will have below freezing temps. We have deep frost in the ground this year and I need to have some antifreeze in the underground piping so I can sleep at night.

Re: Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

Thanks for the responses, never thought of it being able to evaporate. I use RV antifreeze in my camper every year and this seems like a pretty similar use since my intention would be to only have it in the lines for a couple months and of course never heat it up. I think that will be my plan, I wil...

Shutdown during winter (on purpose)

So we will be shutting down the outdoor boiler and switching to indoor propane boiler for the last part of the year due to an extended absence. Although we have had the system for 17 years this is the first time we have attempted a complete shutdown during freezing temps. My thoughts are to drain th...

Re: Firewood too long

Wish I could justify getting a more efficient boiler, think I'm on my last one with this one tho. I am going to disconnect and sell my outdoor hot tub this summer and that should make a considerable difference on wood consumption, we just don't use it enough to warrant the extra wood/work.
