Does the flue need to go in to firebox a bit?

Post by larryjbjr » Tue Jun 13, 2017 7:07 pm

So, I'm planning to build an OWB this weekend. I noticed in some threads and such that the flue actually goes into the firebox a little bit, like 6 inches or so.

Is there a reason for that? Does it help in some way?

Hi larryjbjr and welcome to the site. By running the flue pipe down into the firebox you won't lose as much heat.

OK, due to my design I cannot bring the flue out of the top of the firebox, I am going out of the back of the firebox at the top. Would it still benefit me to go into the firebox a little bit?

I think it may help and I would make the top of the flue 6 or 8 inches below the top of the firebox

Can you lower down the flue exit some? If you could go down around half way or so it would help. Being lower keeps the heat from getting out as easily but also makes it burn cleaner because the smoke gets more chance to burn before it escapes.
