Nice looking owb and for $500, that is a steal. Can you build a fire in it to make sure it has no leaks when it gets warmed up? If so remember that the water will expand when heated and may run out the top if over filled.

Also looks like you will need to replace the rope seal

OK, I fired it up today.

I got the water temperature up to 190°. And there are no leaks anywhere that I can see. Everything works just as it should.

I call Johnson today and they said that, based upon the serial number, this thing is about 17 years old. They must make these things really solid.

The only problem I noticed was that when it reaches temperature and shut the fans off this thing really smokes when idling.

Is that normal?

If the wood is not seasoned it will smoke, make sure that the damper door closes tight and you may be able to loosen the rope seal by spraying it good with wd40 to make sure you get a tight seal there

It will smoke for a little while right after it starts idling but should mostly clear up after a while. If the smoke is going straight up it usually means there is an air leak somewhere. Most likely the rope seals on the doors.
If it drops or kind of just drifts then it is probably normal.

OK, it's smokes heavily for about two minutes, then lightens up quite a bit.

And yes it mostly just drift around.

I do get a little smoke from the door seal area. According to the man that sold it to me, I can adjust the door. I will look into that.

Nice score! Did you get to use it this past winter?
