Whole vs Split logs

Post by redleg105 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 11:46 am

I have been feeding my boiler with a mixture of split and un-split wood but was wondering if using un-split logs is a bad practice. I can hear the hiss when they start to burn. Last Summer we had a lot of rain and even with the wood under cover it seemed to absorb the moisture.
My question is split the logs 8 inches in diameter or less?

I think un-split burns a little longer. Anything under about 10 inches I don't split.

It depends on the style stove. A lot of conventional stoves seem to run more efficient with at least some larger unsplit mixed with some split.

With the gasification stoves I like to split at least in half unless it is a fairly small round. It is almost impossible to get wood too dry for a gasification stove.
